About Indian Derby
Now considered the mother of all horse races in India, the Indian Derby was first held in 1943. It was Edgar Britt, an Australian jockey who rode the winning filly Princess Beautiful in the first-ever race. Another Australian jockey, W.T. Evans, rode a filly named “Her Majesty” in what was the most exciting finish ever in the Indian Derby.
On 8th February 1947, “Her Majesty” had a fall at the start of the race, but, both Evans and the horse got themselves back in the race and finished second. In recent years, Suraj Narredu rode the winning horse, Star Superior, and War Hammer in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
